Eastern Bosnia: places worth seeing

07.10.2026

Eastern Bosnia is the Drina, a forest that is not cut and a mountain with lakes. Višegrad holds the bridge of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović. Andrićgrad is a stone settlement beside that bridge, newer than the arch that carries the older one. Perućica is the primeval forest in Sutjeska National Park. Tjentište is the valley below it. Zelengora holds the mountain lakes. This is not an afternoon trip from Sarajevo. The road asks for a day, and the forest asks you to go as the park says, not as a phone map draws a shortcut.

Summer opens the paths and the lakes. Autumn colours Sutjeska. In winter the roads toward Zelengora and Perućica can stop. Do not set out on the assumption that the entrance is open. Look for firms in this district in the directory by town, and look at the bridge as a building, not as a backdrop for a rush.

The Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge

The bridge in Višegrad is a long stone bridge on the Drina, a work of the sixteenth century, on the list of world heritage. The arches run from one bank to the other, with a sofa space over the middle pier. The river below is green and fast. The walk across is short. Standing lasts longer and is worth more. Ivo Andrić brought this bridge into a novel, but the stone is older than the book and does not ask to be read before it is seen.

Come in the morning if you want the arches without a crowd. At noon the stone is bright and the water is dark. Do not climb the parapet. The bridge is a road and a monument at the same time. Both ask you to walk in the middle, not on the edge.

Andrićgrad

Andrićgrad is a stone settlement beside the bridge, raised in recent times as a square, a street and a memorial to the writer. It is not a medieval town and should not be called one. The square, the gate and the look back at the old bridge make a short walk. If you eat or drink coffee, look at a firm that is working, not at the scenery. The old bridge remains the reason to come. Andrićgrad is an addition on the bank, useful when it rains or when you want shade, not a replacement for the arches.

Perućica

Perućica is the primeval forest in Sutjeska, one of the last large remains of such a forest in Europe. It is a strict reserve. Entry is not a free walk wherever you like. You go on the path and with the company the park keeps that day. The trees are tall, the ground is damp, and the quiet is not arranged. Do not break a branch for a souvenir and do not leave the path for a better frame. The forest is the reason to go south from Višegrad, not another bridge.

A day in Perućica does not fit beside a drive of many hours and Zelengora as well. Whoever wants the forest should give it the whole day and a return in daylight.

Tjentište

Tjentište is the valley in Sutjeska, under the slopes, with a monument that is seen from far away. The valley is the entrance to the feeling of the park: river, meadow and forest that climbs. It is not a replacement for Perućica. It is a place to stop, to see the scale and to ask where walking is allowed that day. The monument has its own history. This text is about the place and the valley, not about the battle. Stay on the ground that is open.

Zelengora

Zelengora is the mountain in Sutjeska, with several mountain lakes. Orlovačko, Štirinsko and the other lakes lie in cirques, cold and dark. The road to them is not a quay walk from Višegrad. It asks for a full day, sturdy shoes and a forecast that is not decoration. Fog can hide the shore. In summer the outing is possible. In late autumn and winter ask before you leave whether the road is alive.

A lake is not fed with the remains of lunch. If you have reached the water, leave it as you found it. Zelengora is not an addition to the bridge on the same afternoon. It is the second reason to cross the east at all.

Eastern Bosnia is assembled from one bridge that lasts for centuries and from a forest that lasts longer than the bridge. Between them is the road. The firms in Višegrad and by the park stay in the directory, with a door. The photograph of the bridge in this guide is the work of Jocelyn Erskine-Kellie and stands under the licence CC BY-SA 4.0.
