Herzegovina is stone, river and a light that turns sharp at noon. Mostar holds the bridge, but the south does not end on the Neretva. Blagaj is a spring under a cliff. Počitelj is a stone town on a slope. Kravice is a set of falls where people swim in summer. Međugorje is a place of pilgrimage. Trebinje is an old town on the Trebišnjica. Hutovo Blato is a wetland of birds. This guide uses that order as a suggestion, not a duty.
Summer here is hot and dry. Spring and autumn give walking without a rush. In winter the bridge is quieter and the falls are fuller. One day in Mostar does not cover Trebinje. Between them lie villages, vineyards and a road that asks for its own time. Firms in Mostar sit on the city map.

Stari Most is the stone arch over the Neretva, in the heart of the old town. The towers on both banks, the cobbles and the coffeehouses by the water keep a person longer than a photograph asks. The divers from the bridge work to their own order and their own skill. It is not a show on a button. The old town climbs narrow streets toward mosques and houses. In the morning the stone is fresh. At noon you look for shade. Toward evening the river darkens and the bridge stays bright.
Do not stay only on the arch. The other bank, the bazaar and the side streets give the town depth. If you eat, choose a firm from the directory, not only the first table with a view. The view is everywhere. The meal is not.
Blagaj is downstream from Mostar, but the feeling is different. The Buna rises under a cliff, and a tekke stands by the spring. The water is cold and clear even in summer. The walk is short, so Blagaj sits well beside Mostar. It does not replace a whole day in the south. Do not climb the cliff and do not enter where you are not allowed. The beauty is the meeting of water and stone, not the crowd on the bank.
Počitelj is a stone settlement on the slope above the Neretva, with a tower and houses that hold one another. It is not large. An hour of walking through the cobbles covers it if you do not hurry. In summer the stone is hot. Morning and late afternoon make the walk easier. Artists have left work here, but the village is not a gallery without inhabitants. A courtyard stays a courtyard.
Kravice is the falls near Ljubuški, wide and stepped. In summer people swim in the pool beneath them. The water is cold when the air is hot. In winter and spring the water is stronger, and swimming is not the same story. The road from Mostar asks for its own time. Do not pack Kravice, Trebinje and Blagaj into one pause. The falls deserve a stay until your head cools, not only until the picture is taken.
Međugorje is a place of pilgrimage in western Herzegovina. The church of St James, Apparition Hill and the way of the cross gather people from many countries. A visit can be religious or only a passage through the district. In both cases a quieter walk and respect for those who are praying are in place. In summer and around the great feasts it is crowded. The village around the shrine has lodging, coffee and shops. It is not a replacement for Mostar. It is another rhythm of the same south.
Trebinje lies on the Trebišnjica, closer to Adriatic light than to Sarajevo fog. The old town, the plane trees on the square and the bridges make a walk that fills an afternoon. The Arslanagić bridge is outside the tight centre and asks for a short trip out. Wine and stone go together here, but tasting is not a duty. The town is smaller than Mostar and therefore easier to read. One day here does not fit the same day as Kravice if you drive without a rush.
Hutovo Blato is a wetland and a nature park among the hills, with channels, reeds and birds. It is not a city promenade. The visit makes sense if you want water that stands and wings, not another stone arch. Boats and paths depend on the season and on what is open that day. Do not invent a departure time. Ask at the entrance.
Herzegovina is assembled from a bridge, a spring, one stone town and water that either falls or stands. The rest is the road. The firms beside those places stay in the directory, with an address, and not as a sentence without a door.
